UBER SAYS IT will, “pause its self-driving car operations” in Phoenix, Pittsburgh and San Francisco after a female pedestrian died after she was hit by one of its autonomous vehicles in Tempe in the state of Arizona.
Police spokesman sergeant Ronald Elcock said the 2017 Volvo vehicle had a human driver on board but that the car had been in autonomous mode and had not appeared to slow down as it approached the victim, Elaine Herzberg (49).
Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said:
Some incredibly sad news out of Arizona. We’re thinking of the victim’s family as we work with local law enforcement to try and understand what has happened.
