PHOTO FOOTAGE shot from the dash cam of a taxi driver appears to show an Uber private hire driver fighting in the street with a passenger.
The pictures show two men taking violent swings at each other by the side of a busy road in Battersea, South West London, as vehicles drive by. One of the men appears to try to hit the other one with a weapon, said by witnesses to be a “wrench or spanner”.
The film, shot by a black cab driver called ‘Mick’ also shows a woman trying to break up the fight, near to Queenstown Road.
I was just driving along and saw the fight. It looked like one of the men had a weapon in his hand. It looked like a wrench or spanner, something quite long and tall. Quite shocking behaviour.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions about who was at fault and it could have been the passenger’s fault. But, if you are a professional driver, you shouldn’t be fighting with your passengers.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at approximately 11:45pm to reports of a fight in the Wandsworth Road area.
“A man, an Uber driver aged in his 40s, reported he had been assaulted by a male who was a passenger in his car. A female was present and no injuries were reported. No one has been arrested and enquiries are continuing.”
A spokesman for Uber said:
While incidents like this are exceptionally rare, we take them very seriously. Both riders and partner-drivers can be barred from using the app following a serious incident.
We are currently investigating this and will take the appropriate action when we have spoken to the authorities and those involved.
