A LICENSED LONDON private hire driver has been sentenced to eight years in prison after he was found guilty of raping a woman from Cambridge.
Siddiq Muzumder (33) picked up the victim after she enjoyed a night out with friends in London at the Pacha nightclub on 26 April 2014.
The jury at Cambridge Cown Court was told that Muzumder pulled over on to the hard shoulder of the M11 motorway at around 1am, just ten minutes from the victim’s home.
The minicab driver then raped the woman – who was asleep or unconscious – and dropped her off close to her home.
The victim reported the attack to the authorities the next morning and detectives arrested the minicab driver after they identified the licensed private hire car firm he worked for.
Muzumder, of Roman Road, East London, denied rape but was found guilty by a unanimous verdict at Cambridge Crown Court. He was sentenced to eight years in prison at Norwich Crown Court.
A police spokesman said:
This was a monstrous crime, where the private hire driver was entrusted to deliver the young woman safely home. He abused this position.
“The victim has been very strong during the process and has co-operated with every police procedure. A key element to securing this conviction was early reporting of the crime, which enabled us to secure forensic evidence. It is this evidence that helped us secure the conviction due to the victim having no memory of the event.”
