A 23 YEAR old Derby mother-of-one has been labelled a small-minded ‘bigot’ after she accused a taxi driver of being a ‘terrorist’.
Derbyshire Magistrates Court heard that Cassandra Toland abused the cabbie and then attacked him as she sat in his car. Ms Toland said the taxi driver was a: “A terrorist and should not even be in this country,” and then called a female police officer, a “dirty tramp”.
Prosecution counsel Peter Bettany said Toland became abusive after she and her cousin asked the cabbie to stop at a cashpoint in a Tesco car park. Mr Bettany added:
She started to racially abuse the driver and then hit him once in the back of the head. He asked her to get out of the car and she reacted by swearing at him and calling him ‘a foreigner’ and ‘a terrorist’.
District judge Jonathan Taeffe sentenced Toland to 12 weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months, for racially-aggravated assault and said: “This was an appalling display of bigotry, arrogance and aggression towards a taxi driver simply trying to earn a living and make enough money to support his family and pay his taxes.”
