HOVERTRAVEL BOSSES are in talks with local authorities in Hampshire with a view to launching a water taxi service in and around Southampton, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.
A feasibility service will look into the commercial viability of the project and it is hoped a pilot programme will start some time next year.
Hovertravel managing director Neil Chapman said:
We are both a transport business, linking communities, and a unique tourist attraction as the only commercial passenger hovercraft service in the world. Hovertravel is constantly looking for additional cross-Solent opportunities and by working with local councils, we can open up new avenues for tourism and the associated benefits of increased visitor spend.
Farnham Borough Council leader Sean Woodward said: “The plans to link up with the Waterside is an interesting opportunity, with the development of the Fawley Waterside. It only takes minutes to cross the Solent and would save a 65 mile round trip by car.”
