A SAN FRANCISCO taxi driver lost control of his vehicle and jumped a kerb in the downtown area of the city, critically injuring himself and two bystanders.

A spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department said the licensed hackney carriage ploughed into an advertising kiosk and a shoeshine stand on a busy street corner.

Police officer Grace Gatpandan said:

The taxi driver and two people at the shoeshine stand were rushed to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Witness Susan Giammona, who sells shawls and scarves near the crash site said: “The cab came barreling down Market Street, hit the newspaper stand and then the next thing I saw was an old man flying over the shoeshine stand.”
