A FEMALE taxi driver has been decorated with the 2017 International Driver of the Year Award after she came to the aid of a pensioner during the Hurricane Harvey downpour.
Ramonia McCarty (above) spent 18 hours with 76 year old Ms Helen in her Yellow Cab vehicle until she was able to driver her safely home through the flooded streets of Houston.
Matt Daus, president of the International Association of Transport Regulators (IATR), which gave the award, said:
Ramonia’s act of bravery, coupled with her calm and caring nature, exemplifies the qualities and professionalism that IATR seeks to encourage in licensed drivers around the world.
And for Ms Helen, Ramonia was a ray of hope, courage and kindness, which were but one example of a career of outstanding service.
Ramonia, proud mother of twins Felix and Felice (21) and Raynell (17), said: “I have always instilled in my children the need to have great respect and admiration for their fellow Houstonians.
“This city is really a big family that pulls together in times of great need and you just never turn your back on that.”
