FOUR SOUTHAMPTON hackney carriages, plus one private hire vehicle licensed by Transport for London (TfL), were given prohibition notices after a joint operation by traffic police and council compliance and enforcement officials.

The vehicles were ordered off the road after a number of defects were incovered, including two rear tyres worn down to the metal on the TfL-licensed cab. Officers served an immediate notice to take the vehicle off the road.

A total of 13 licensed vehicles were sent for testing, including nine hackney carriages and four private hire vehicles.

Phil Bates, licensing manager at Southampton City Council, said:

It is disappointing that some of the vehicles needed to be taken off the road. But this operation demonstrates the council will do all it can to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
