A WHEELCHAIR-bound Redbridge man is urging his local council to allocate extra funding for taxi and private hire trips for vulnerable residents.

Wasif Bhatti (39) lives in Danehurst Gardens in East London and is demanding Redbridge Council work with local minicab companies to bring in the Capital Call ‘two swipes system’ – which is a subsidised PHV service for Taxicard members.

The system is already in place in areas like Hounslow, Ealing and Lambeth and Mr Bhatti said the introduction of cheaper fares would help him to get out of his house more often.

Mr Bhatti said:

The current situation makes me feel dreadful, as I am on a low income and find it difficult to leave my house because of the cost. I really do have to think twice before I go or not go out.

The council simply isn’t doing enough to help me because they want to save money. Extra money is sitting in reserve so why can’t they put it into this scheme? Other boroughs can do it so why can’t they?

“Introducing these things really would make a huge difference and means that more disabled and vulnerability people can get out and about.”
