DUBAI’S ROADS & Transport Authority (RTA) has announced plans to legalize and licence autonomous cab vehicles in the United Arab Emirates city state by 2021.
The joint proposals, with the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) , sets out 64 initiatives, including the roll-out of driverless taxis and the introduction of innovative transport solutions, including a trial run of electric and gas-powered vehicles.
RTA director general Al Tayer said:
The RTA has also sanctioned a plan to improve the attitudes of taxi drivers of the DTC, with surveillance cameras in cabs and an upgrade to the computer systems of the customers’ happiness centres.
How much Dubai’s taxi drivers will want to co-operate with the RTA’s ‘educative programme to deal with the etiquette of dealing politely with customers,’ since they will all lose their jobs in four years time, remains to be seen.
