DERBY CITY council boss Ranjit Banwait is being urged to take action against colleague Gulfraz Nawaz after he gave a reference to a taxi driver with 19 previous convictions.
Mr Nawaz is a hackney carriage driver himself and could be stripped of the membership of two committees – the communities scrutiny review board and the chairmanship of the personnel committee.
The council’s standards committee has recommended Mr Nawaz receive training in standards and safeguarding and conservative councillor Chris Poulter said:
It was unusual to see how united councillors were in this recommendation and how they wanted to set an example.
Chairman of the standards committee councillor Baggy Shanker said: “There is no timescale involved in the process and it could be some time before it is known if action is being taken or not.”
Mr Nawaz did not attend the council’s standards committee meeting and said he would comment at a later date on the allegations made against him.
