A JERUSALEM court has found a former chauffeur of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu guilty of multiple sex-crimes against minors and sentenced him to 27 years in prison.
Ilan Shmuel, who was a back-up driver for Mr Netanyahu until 2012 and had on ocassions driven the prime minister, was convicted of numerous indecent acts against minors, as well as rape and sodomy – some of which were committed against family members.
The court heard how allegations of the assaults, carried out between 1988 and 2009, came to the attention of The Shin Bet Security Services, who informed the police.
Following sentencing, Jerusalem prosecutor Anat Greenbaum said the court had taken into account the gravity of the acts, their persistence and the cruelty with which they were carried out. Defence representative, Mechael Ironi, said he was stunned by the verdict and would launch an appeal: “My client insists on his innocence and will continue to fight for the truth.”
